In 2009 the Hunan Museum was designated by the Ministry of Finance and the National Cultural Heritage Administration as one of eight national key museums jointly developed by central and provincial government. On 11 December 2009 the 44th executive meeting of the Hunan Provincial People’s Government resolved to proceed with the museum’s renovation and expansion, and on 31 May 2010 the project received formal approval from the Provincial Development and Reform Commission.
